for the first time in our history. when mitt romney was governor, the credit rating of his state was upgraded. that's the kind of change that we'll get with a mitt romney presidency. >> governor scott walker, republican from wisconsin, is also in new hampshire today, stumping on behalf of the romney campaign. earlier today, he spoke at the state's gop convention. meanwhile, today, vice president joe biden is in florida. he wrapped up an event in ft. myers not long ago, where he said mitt romney and paul ryan will block any bipartisan attempts to reduce the debt. >> paul ryan even voted against the simpson/bowles plan he talked about now, as a member of the commission. it's important to know why. because they will not vote for a single solitary reduction in the debt if it includes one dollar in new taxes for millionaires. >> neither governor romney nor president obama have any public events scheduled today or tomorrow. they'll be spending a lot of the weekend prepping for that first debate, wednesday in denver. we'll have a whole lot more on all of these stories throughout the next three hours

that the policies of the previous administration created, the same policies that governor romney supports. that's a very strong argument. no one i think on the democratic side will go around and celebrate and sit there and say the job is done, but when the choice in voters' minds, especially when you have this debate in the coming debates, the president is going to be able to turn around in a very strong and forceful way and say, listen, we've created 5 million jobs. the unemployment rate is now under 8% and governor romney your policies are the ones that will end up creating a worse economic climate, a worse jobs crisis because we know that. it already happened before. so that's what i think it does. it provides the president a really strong contrast. >> susan, mitt romney ate his spinach for that debate. peggy noonan who has been riding the campaign trail of mitt romney and what he's been doing it pretty hard in her editorials. noonan writing now the real romney is the one who can communicate. he's straight and direct and not fancy. forgivably jargony but worried about america and sin veer. t

hole over ten years in the government's revenue. now, what governor romney says is i can make that up by closing tax expenditures and loopholes, but there's two problems with that. one, the arithmetic. if you you just look at people over $200,000, if you just look at the wealthiest couple of percent, the revenue cuts about $250 billion and the deductions, the broadening of the base gets you back about 160. so you're short about 90 billion. there's the math right there. and i heard absolutely nothing last night in a makes those numbers magically work out. in fact one of the things that governor romney said last night, he said, quote, i will not reduce the taxes paid by high income americans. now, this is a guy going around talking about the extent of his tax cuts. he said i will not reduce the taxes paid. a lot of people are scratching their heads. >> and they'll keep scratching. let me tell you something very interesting, bob. there was another candidate for president who also argued his tax cuts wouldn't benefit the rich. he said it during a presidential debate on the exact same date

in a spiral to death. can he do it? i don't know. i have not seen any indication from governor romney or his campaign at any moment, whether it was the convention, during the summer, since the convention, that suggests they are able to maximize, you know, an opportunity. so i'm a little suspicious. but the reality is, he's going to come in here with a little lowered expectations and at least in terms of the public opinion polls. but let's be honest. he's a good debater. the problem with governor romney is he tends to also put his foot in his mouth and create these land minds, like the $10,000 bet. which if that happens in this it debate, it will be a disaster. >> is it the idea of him having some zingers for his opponent who was pretty academic on the issues and has been very well schooled up in the debate process, does the romney camp actually think that zingers are going to get president obama off his game and have an impression on the american people? susan, what do you think about that? >> i think, first of all, you love saying the word zingers. it seems to be very much part of the conve

handled it best. certainly people they want specifics, so governor romney, he needs to tell how with some detail his administration will be different from not just the obama administration, but from the president bush. with president obama, his challenge is to spell out to people. tell them how things are going to be different. in his second term than they were in his first term without acknowledging that the first term was necessarily bad, but people don't want same old same old. they want a vision of the future and we've come away to say the end comment at the debates tonight may be the most important part. each candidates wants to play, the first object is make no mistake. make no big error. if they have a nice, closing argument, then they can come out. i don't think president obama wants any drama. no drama obama because in debates, normally sort of cool. i don't think he can afford to overplay that hand tonight. for mitt romney, it's a good opportunity to attack, but not be seen as being some sort of attack dog. put the president on the defensive. >> let me bring in jason chaffitz fr
